Aquilaria malaccensis Distribution
Agarwood can be found in several Asian countries such as Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Bhutan and India. This plant has medicinal properties and is used as incense in religious ceremonies and is much sought after as a perfume ingredient, especially in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Generally found in Indonesian forests at an altitude of 0-850 m above sea level. Suitable for growing in hot climates with temperatures between 28-34 �C, humidity around 80%, and rainfall between 1,000-2,000 mm/year.
Morphology of Aquilaria malaccensis
- Taproot.
- Hard woody stem, smooth, sometimes grooved. Young bark, light brown, becomes whiter and smoother as it matures.
- Single leaves, spirally arranged, leaf blades thin rough, oval-lanceolate, 3-3.5 cm wide, and 6-8 cm long.
- The fruit is green, egg-shaped, slightly woody, measuring 4 x 2.5 cm.
- There are 2 seeds per fruit, pear-shaped covered with colored feathers orange-brown.
Cultivation of Aquilaria malaccensis
- Generative propagation (using seeds).
- Separate the seeds from the skin of the fruit, soak the seeds in antifungal (regen) for 30 minutes. Air dry for approximately 2 hours. Water the seeds with a growth regulator dissolved in water such as atonic. Dry for 1 hour then sow.
