Asystasia nemorum Distribution
Mareto is a plant that originates from Central Malesia (Java to Maluku). This species was introduced as a medicinal plant, to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore more than a century ago. In Indonesia, especially the people of Maluku, have used all parts of the plant as traditional medicine to treat coughs and shortness of breath. The young leaves of Mareto have also been used and consumed by the people of Sumbawa as a vegetable. Mareto is generally found growing in secondary forests, bushes, rice fields, river banks, roadsides, hedgerows and plantations. Usually found in shady or slightly shaded places in the lowlands.
