Calliandra tergemina var. emarginata is native to Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela, where it grows in forests on river banks, in valleys and on mountain slopes to an altitude of about 1000 m. The genus epithet 'Calliandra' comes from the Greek for 'kalos' 'beautiful' and 'andros' 'stamen', referring to the plant's showy silky red flower stamens. The species epithet tergermina means 'three-paired' and refers to the 3 leaflets present on each petiole. The variety epithet 'emarginata' means 'with notched edges', which describes how the mature terminal leaflets split down the middle. This plant can be successfully cultivated also in pots, for yard and terrace decoration. Because of its slow growing characteristics, it is often used as a bonsai.
