Acrostichum aureum Distribution
Sea ferns are pantropical plants, found along the coasts of Asia, America and Africa. This plant is abundant in mangrove vegetation throughout Southeast Asia. This plant has various functions in people's lives, locally it can be used as food, traditional medicine, and is often planted as an ornamental plant. In Malaysia, Indonesia (Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Kangean), and the Philippines, the young shoots can be consumed as vegetables, but this plant contains thiaminase, an enzyme that robs the body of B complex vitamins. However, consuming it by cooking it first can eliminate thiaminase. In India, the leaves are often used to treat snake bites. Meanwhile, the leaves and rhizomes have been used throughout Southeast Asia as a poultice to treat wounds and boils. Apart from being a traditional medicine, vegetable and ornamental plant, Vietnamese and Pacific peoples have also used the hard, dry leaves like parchment which are sewn together and then used as roofing material (a substitute for straw).Agroecology of Acrostichum aureum
Sea ferns are plants in humid lowland tropical and subtropical areas. Generally found in coastal areas, open mud flats in brackish swamps, edges of mangrove swamps or marshes, disturbed or clear-cut mangrove forests, along tidal streams, along land-side mangrove forests because they are less tolerant of seawater inundation. Young plants can tolerate changes between the two conditions (saline or non-saline), but older plants become accustomed to either saline or non-saline. Sea ferns can grow well in full sun.
Morphology of Acrostichum aureum
- The rhizome is erect, fibrous and covered with relatively large, linear to lanceolate to broadly ovate scales near the base of the leaf stalk, shiny or pale brown with a blackish central stripe.
- The dark green and erect or curved leaves consist of 24-30 leaflets in an alternate arrangement. Petioles (known as stipes) usually 1 m long. Five to eight pairs of leaflets near the tip of the leaf, fertile and covered with reddish brown sporangia the remaining leaves are infertile. The leaflets are pinnate, narrowly oval to elliptical in shape with blunt or rounded leaf bases, blunt leaf tips, small tails (mucronate), and bright red when young. Sporangia and sterile hairs (paraphyses) will cover the entire surface bottom of leaflets except midrib and gives a dark brown appearance.
- Flowers are not produced.
Cultivation of Acrostichum aureum
Naturally propagated by spores. Vegetative propagation can be possible by dividing the clump and rhizome cuttings.
