Galphimia glauca Distribution

The golden rain plant is native to Mexico and Central America and has been introduced to warm tropical and sub-tropical areas for use as a medicinal and ornamental plant. Currently it has been naturalized in the United States (Florida), Cuba, St. Croix and Peru. In traditional Latin American medicine, it is used for asthma and allergies. In traditional Mexican medicine, it is used as a sedative.

Golden rain grows in dry and damp habitats, requires full sun, at altitudes ranging from 700-2,300 m above sea level. This plant prefers well-drained soil with a pH of 5.6 to 7.5, namely dry sandy soil. Average annual temperature 17 - 28 ºC, average annual rainfall 700-2,500 mm/year.

Stems are round, erect, blackish brown, with sympodial branching. Young stems are usually reddish.
