There are about 600 species of Justicia distributed throughout the tropics and into warmer parts of North America. Widely planted as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical gardens and as a conservatory plant in temperate climates. The genus is named after James Justice (1698-1763), a Scottish horticulturist and writer. The species epithet "brandegeeana" is named after Townsend Brandegee, a US civil engineer who published research on plants native to California and Mexico. Although the species epithet is spelled as "brandegeana" in some horticulture books, the correct spelling is "brandegeeana". The common name of "Shrimp Plant" comes from the shrimp-like appearance of the curved flower spike. Justicia brandegeeana, commonly called "Shrimp Plants" originates from Mexico. This plant is usually used as a colorful border or hedge throughout the year because it has bright and long-lasting bracts/modified leaves. This red lollipop plant is also used by the Huastec people in Mexico as a traditional medicine.

The flowers are actually located between the bracts in the spike inflorescence. They are tubular, bi-labile and white with purple to red spots on the lower lip. Although flowers only last a few days, the bracts remain fresh for months.
Fruit is capsule or ovate (dry, fissured fruit) 1 cm long. Each capsule contains 2 to 4 seeds.

Cultivation of Justicia brandegeeana

Justicia brandegeeana propagation uses stem cuttings or clump division. Clump division provides the easiest solution for propagating the plant outdoors. Dig up the plant and remove it from the soil.
