Lantana trifolia Distribution

Verbena shrub or Lantana trifolia is a flowering plant from the Verbenaceae family which is widespread in South America (Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana), the Caribbean, Central America (Panama to Guatemala). L. trifolia has also become widely naturalized in Africa. This species is generally taken from nature for local use as food (fruit), medicine and a source of wood. This plant is also often planted by people as an ornamental plant and hedge plant. Based on its function as a medicinal plant, traditionally L. trifolia is widely used to treat various disease complaints, especially in the treatment of coughs and colds. In Central Uganda, apart from being valued as a medicinal plant, this species is also widely used in most cultural rituals. Where, L. trifolia leaves are used in herbal baby baths with the aim of getting blessings and brushing teeth using L. trifolia stems in the morning is believed to bring goodness and luck during the day. People also believe that L. trifolia stems placed on the roof of their house by parents who have stubborn children can prevent them from committing repeated crimes.

The plant is a subtropical to tropical plant and is not tolerant of frost. It grows in a sunny position and does well in a variety of well-drained soils.
