Jeluak or Microcos tomentosa is a species from the Malvaceae family which is widespread in Myanmar, South China, Indochina, Thailand, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan), Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. This species is generally harvested from the wild for local use as food, medicine and a source of fiber and wood. The fibrous bark can be used to make rope. Used for indoor construction and suitable for making tool handles, agricultural equipment and sports equipment. This species also produces fruit that can be consumed when ripe. Traditionally, this species has also been used in several countries, including Indonesia, as a medicinal plant, which is able to treat several complaints, including coughs and diarrhea.
Agroecology of Microcos tomentosa
Jeluak habitat in Java and Malaysia is very common in mixed dipterocarp forests (generally found in secondary forests), at altitudes from sea level to 600 m above sea level. Apart from that, it can also be found growing in logged areas and landslides.
Morphology of Microcos tomentosa
  • Taproot.
  • The stem is straight, often branched from below and fluted. The outer bark is smooth, slightly scaly, dark gray to brown in color, while the inner bark is reddish brown, sandy, fibrous. The twigs are slightly striated, colored pale brown to dark brown, densely covered with hairs when young, and glabrous when older.
  • Single leaves, alternate, leaf blade oval, obovate or sometimes elliptical, leaf base rounded, leaf tip tapered, edge serrated leaves, the upper surface is glabrous or rarely covered with hairs, the lower surface of the leaves is hairy like a star, the base of the leaves is three-veined, young leaves are pink or dark brown to pale brown, and become green when old. There are 3 prominent basal veins, veins secondary 5-7 pairs, tertiary veins reticulate. Stipules linear. 1-2(\u20132.5) mm, brown, apical not swollen, densely covered with hairs. Not gummy.
  • Flowers have 5 petals (corollas) oval in shape, yellow, on the outside densely covered with hairs at the base and bald towards the top. Sepals (petals) obovate, densely covered with hairs on both sides. Stamens with filaments about 2 - 5 mm long, sparsely covered with hairs at the base and glabrous towards the apex, anthers with a diameter of 0.2 \u2013 0.3 mm. Ovaries 3-locular, ellipsoid or ovoid, diameter 0.8 \u2013 1.3 mm, densely covered with bristles. The length of the pistil (style) is 3 - 3.5 mm, covered with hairs at the base and glabrous towards the top. Inflorescences are panicles, terminal or axillary.
