Mahang damar comes from Kalimantan, Cambodia, Java, Malaya, Myanmar, Nicobar Islands, Philippines, Sumatra, Thailand. M triloba is widely used by local communities for traditional medicines. Meanwhile, the results of the study by Jang et.al. (2004) and Puri (2001), stated that M. triloba has the potential to be used to prevent cancer. In Kalimantan (Sabah and Sarawak) Macaranga triloba is used as a medicine for stomach aches. Likewise, the Talang Mamak community in Bukit Tigapuluh National Park (TNBT) Jambi has used this plant as a medicine for diarrhea and mouth ulcers. Other uses: the young leaves are eaten, the roots are used as yellow dye, and the bark is used as glue. Dayak Kenyah in TNKM reportedly make soft rice wrappers from macaranga leaves either for home use or as supplies for the fields/forest, even to wrap cakes (Saga).

Mahang damar is classified as a pioneer plant that forms secondary forests, and it is found from the lowlands to an altitude of around 1,400 m above sea level. Mahang damar grows in a variety of habitat conditions, including dry land dipterocarp forests, swamp forest edges, and is also one of the few types of Mahang that is able to live in forests that experience periodic drought.

  • The branch-free stem can reach 25 m, is round, smooth, slightly greenish gray in color, and sometimes has but small buttresses. The outer skin is quite thick, has thin flesh which is slightly whitish yellow in color , and somewhat sticky.
  • The leaves are single, three-lobed, limp, the upper and lower leaf surfaces are green, but the lower leaf surface is rougher and slightly hairy.
  • Male and female flowers are separate, the males are relatively large smaller than female flowers. Small yellow flowers, arranged in panicles.
  • Fruits are boxes divided into three chambers, small and hard.
