Amorphophallus titanum Distribution
Amorphophallus titanum or corpse flower is a native Indonesian flora originating from tropical rainforests in Sumatra. The most widespread distribution is in the equatorial area, namely Bengkulu and Lampung. This plant is very famous because it is giant and only grows on the island of Sumatra, so it is said to be an endemic plant native to Sumatra. This rare flora was discovered by Dr. Odoardo Beccar, a native Italian researcher in 1878. He discovered Amorphophallus titanum around the Anai Valley waterfall, West Sumatra. Amorphophallus titanum is used as an ornamental plant because of its unique shape and the ability to attract the attention of many visitors. Apart from that, it is also used as research material for scientists around the world. Another benefit that can be taken from this plant is the use of its tubers as food. However, processing takes a long time because the tubers have a sap that makes it itchy. The tubers are useful because of their glucomannan content. Glucomannan is used as a thickening agent, jelly rich in fiber (dietary fibers) and dietary supplements (for anti-cholesterol, neutralizing blood sugar levels, digestive health, absorption of toxic substances in digestion and weight control agent). Apart from that, it is also used in other traditional medicine.Agroecology of Amorphophallus titanum
A. titanum grows mostly at an altitude of 301-341 m above sea level, on a slope of 25-45% (steep). Latosol soil type or characterized by the presence of a fertile soil layer full of litter in the top layer. A. titanum tends to be found in places with low light intensity so that the soil and surrounding environment becomes damp, at an average temperature ranging from 24-25 °C with an average relative humidity ranging from 80-83%.
Morphology of Amorphophallus titanum
- The roots of Amorphophallus titanum consist of tubers. The tubers are rounded and slightly flat, with a diameter of about 65 cm and a height of about 40 cm, the weight of the tubers can reach 100 kg, the surface is slightly rough and there are many accessories such as potential shoots, light brown in color , does not have side shoots.
- The stem is a pseudostem composed of leaf midribs that are attached to each other.
- The leaves have a diameter of approx. 7 m long, leaf pinnacles are elliptical in shape, up to 40 cm long, pointed at the tip, skin-like when touched, the upper surface is green, slightly shiny. The petiole of the adult plant can grow up to 3 m height . Leaves can last for 9 to 24 months. Leaves on young plants only last 6 months.
- Flowers have single inflorescences, flower stalks are short, about 30 long. – 70 cm and a diameter of about 10 – 15 cm, motifs and colors like those on the leaf stalk. The place where the flowers attach is at the base of the cob. The cob (spadix) is yellow and surrounded by a purplish red flower sheath. The height of the spadix can reach 3 m, giving the corpse flower the nickname “Giant Flower”. The flowers are monoecious, however, the male and female flowers do not ripen at the same time. The flowers fully open (ripe female flowers) at night and emit a dead smell. The male flowers ripen the next day producing yellow pollen, making it naturally difficult to self-pollinate. When corpse flower pollination does not occur, the flower will wilt as if it is dead. The flowers and stems rot like they don't leave a trace. The corpse flower does not die, but enters a period of rest or dormancy. Next, it grows into the flower phase. The unique thing about this plant is that there are two life phases, namely generative (in the form of flowers) and vegetative (in the form of leaves) which cannot be seen simultaneously in one plant. So when it forms leaves it will not flower and when it is flowering time it will not have leaves.
- The fruit is bright red or dark orange. The shape of the fruit is oval, slightly rounded, and grows in clusters with one seed.
- The elliptical-shaped seeds are reddish-orange in color, and sometimes a slightly whitish blue color.
Cultivation of Amorphophallus titanum
Propagation can be done by seeds and tubers. The tubers are cut lengthwise. The growing shoot must be included so that the tuber pieces can germinate. It is necessary to ensure that the tuber pieces do not rot due to bacterial and fungal attacks.
