Anthurium flowers or Anthurium andraeanum are flowering plants originating from southwestern South America, especially Ecuador and Colombia. Now, it has spread widely to several countries and is easily adapted to both tropical and subtropical environments. The largest anthurium exporting countries are the Netherlands to supply the European market, and Hawaii to supply the American market. The anthurium flower is the national flower of Mauritius and is ranked ninth in the global flower trade. This species is widely cultivated for use as an ornamental plant and cut flower. The beautiful, attractive and long-lasting shape of the flowers is the reason this species is popular as an ornamental plant and cut flower with economic value. Anthurium adraeanum is also included in the list of indoor plants that can remove toxic substances from the air. As an air filtering plant, anthurium removes formaldehyde, ammonia, xylene, and toluene. Apart from the beauty of its flowers, this species has also been used in several countries as a medicinal plant which is believed to be able to help overcome various disease complaints, including use in traditional Chinese and Filipino medicine. However, caution is required in its use, because this species produces calcium oxalate crystals which can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation.
Agroecology of Anthurium andraeanum
Anthurium flowers can be found growing well in wet forests at an altitude of 400-1,200 m above sea level. Its growth prefers moist, well-drained soil, positioned in partial shade. Too little light will cause the plant to flower less and grow slowly. Required minimum temperature is 14 °C, and maximum 30 °C. Temperatures that are too low reduce flower production, the flower sheaths enlarge. On the other hand, at temperatures that are too high, plants cannot grow well. The light intensity required is 20-30% with low to moderate air humidity requirements. It is preferable that the air humidity is not more than 60%.
Morphology of Anthurium andraeanum

Fibrous roots.
Stems short, erect, sometimes elongated, climbing, with adventitious aerial roots.
Leaves simple (unifoliate), alternate (alternate), dark green, large, heart-shaped and glossy with leaf margins smooth, can reach 20 cm in length, stalked. The surface texture of the leaves is somewhat rough. The veins are pinnate and may have lighter colored veins than the rest of the leaf like a tail, cylindrical, sometimes bent, creamy yellow, while the sheath or spathe is bright red to bright orange which is wide, flat, shriveled, heart-shaped, waxy.
The berries, small, round, fleshy, yellow are produced along the stalk.

Cultivation of Anthurium andraeanum

Propagation is carried out through seeds, vegetative parts of the plant (separation of seedlings or stem cuttings), and in vitro culture.
Sapling shoots come from healthy parents and grow well. Separating the seedlings from the mother whose seedlings have roots and have 3- 4 leaves.
Propagate by stem cuttings by cutting the parent stem 3-4 cm long along with the roots (it is recommended that the parent be over 2 years old with a minimum height of 45 cm). The wound is treated with fungicide/bactericide. The shoots will grow within 1-2 months. The sprouted seeds can be planted in pots or directly in the ground.
