Biancaea sappan Distribution

Secang was first discovered by Kimichi (a Spanish national) in Brazil. This plant grows abundantly and is spread across Europe, America and Asia. It has long been known to the public as a traditional medicinal plant. Decoction of the wood produces a light ivory red color which is used to dye weaving, cakes, drinks, or as ink. The main phenol content in secang is brazilin which has anticancer effects.

This plant is found in tropical areas, in open areas at an altitude of 500-1,000 m above sea level. Grows naturally in secondary forests. Annual temperature 24-28 °C, rainfall 700-4,300 mm/year. Grows on clay and calcareous rocks, tolerates sandy soil, and a soil pH of 5-7.5.
