This plant is thought to originate from the Indo-China region, but is found to have spread naturally in Asia starting from India in the west, Sri Lanka, Burma, China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan), Taiwan, south through Indo-China to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

This plant can be found in teak forests, lower mountain forests, bamboo forests, grasslands, up to an altitude of 1,300 m above sea level. Requires loose and well-drained soil so that the rhizomes do not rot.
