Kluwek is a plant native to Indonesia which belongs to the Flacourtiaceae family where all parts of the plant can be used. The kluwek plant is distributed in the Malesia region (Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea). Kluwek fruit can be processed into food ingredients such as snacks, cooking oil (kepayang oil), and seasonings. Other uses are as a food preservative, medicine and antiseptic.Agroecology of Pangium edule
Kluwek grows scattered in primary or secondary rainforest areas, in areas experiencing deforestation, grows wild or is kept on riverbanks or in teak forest areas. This tree grows well in areas with an altitude of between 10 - 1,000 m above sea level (above sea level) on alluvial, podzolic, rocky or clay soils that are poor in nutrients. This plant generally grows on river banks, watery areas and community gardens. Kluwek trees do not require special soil requirements, but will grow well if the soil has a pH of 5.5 - 6.5, with an average annual rainfall of 2,000 - 5,000 mm, in full sunlight.
Morphology of Pangium edule
- Very sturdy taproot.
- The main stem is large, the young twigs are hairy (hairy) and gray in color. The bark is reddish or gray-brown and sometimes rough with many hardened gaps.
- The leaves are single, gathered at the end of the twig and have long stems. The leaf blades of young trees are three-grooved, while on old trees the leaf blades are oval and wide at the base, and the tip is tapered brown-haired and tightly arranged. The leaf veins on the lower side are prominent. The leaves are about 20-60 cm long and 15-40 cm wide. The leaves fall and leave a clear mark.
- Flowers\u00a0kluwek\u00a0are greenish brown, grow on. in the leaf axils or almost at the ends of the twigs. The male flowers are arranged in panicles, while the female flowers generally appear singly at the ends of the twigs.
- The fruit is asymmetrical, oval-shaped with both ends Blunt. The size varies with a length of 7-10 cm or more. The diameter of the fruit is around 10-25 cm, the flesh is pale yellow, soft and edible. The skin of the fruit is reddish brown with a rough surface containing lenticels.
- The seeds are large, numerous, arranged neatly on the fruit axis like cempedak fruit, gray in color, pyramid-shaped and hard. Large fruit contains up to 30 seeds, while small fruit contains around 12 seeds. In seeds there is a seed core (endosperm) which contains a lot of fat. In fresh fruit, the endosperm is white, if the fruit has been stored for a long time, the color of the endosperm changes to black. Between the endosperm and the shell is a thin brown membrane. The seed coat is rough with a pericarp 6-10 mm thick, woody and grooved.
Cultivation of Pangium edule
- Kluwek can be propagated through seeds although it takes a long time, around 4 months, for the seeds to be ready for planting. Therefore, the seeds must be given preliminary treatment (scarification) because kluwek has a hard seed coat so the seed dormancy period must be broken first.
- Starts to bear fruit continuously throughout the season starting at the age of 15 years.
