Salacca zalacca Distribution

Salak comes from Indonesia (Java and Sumatra). Salak is cultivated in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Salak has also spread to the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Queensland (Australia) and also Fiji. In Indonesia, there are approximately 20 well-known species differentiated according to the place of origin such as sidempuan salak from North Sumatra, condet salak from Jakarta, pondoh salak from Yogyakarta.

It grows well in tropical lowlands with humid conditions, at an altitude of 1-400 m above sea level. In production centers, the average annual rainfall is between 1,700-3,100 mm/year. Salak likes fertile and loose soil with a pH of 4.5-7.5. Cannot tolerate full sunlight (100%), but 50-70% is sufficient, therefore shade plants are needed.

Leaves are pinnately compound, 3-7 m long. Stem, midrib and leaflets are spiny. Leaflets are lanceolate, pointed tip, size 8 x 85 cm, bottom side has a layer of wax.

Slightly round fruit/round egg upside down, pointed at the base rounded at the tip, covered in shiny yellow-brown to red-brown scales, there are small spines at the tip of the scales. Flesh is thick, creamy yellow to whitish.
Seeds 1-3 grains, brown to black. hard.
