Monkey ear is an endemic plant in tropical rainforests in southeastern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and has naturalized in New Zealand, southeastern Australia, Portugal, Italy, Russia and Japan, then spread to Peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia.
